Pitter-patter on the windowpane, the smell of petrichor, a steaming cup of chai — monsoon is magic. And for little ones stuck indoors, it's the perfect time to get creative with art and craft. Here are seven of our favourites from our Enfance classrooms.
1. Raindrop Watercolour Paintings
Paint a blue watercolour wash on thick paper. While still wet, sprinkle with salt. Watch as the salt creates beautiful raindrop-like patterns as it absorbs the paint. Magical!
2. Umbrella Collages
Cut out umbrella shapes from colourful paper. Let children decorate them with tissue paper, glitter, and paint, then hang them from strings for a cheerful classroom or bedroom display.
3. Cloud Dough Play
Mix 8 cups of plain flour with 1 cup of baby oil for the most satisfying, cloud-like dough. Add a few drops of blue food colouring for a stormy sky effect. Mould into clouds, raindrops, and puddles.
4. Leaf Prints
Collect leaves that have fallen in the rain. Coat them in paint and press firmly onto paper for beautiful nature prints. Each leaf makes a unique pattern!
5. Paper Boat Flotilla
Teach your child to fold a simple origami boat, then float them in a basin of water. Time how long they float before they sink — hello, science experiment!
6. Frog Life-Cycle Craft
Monsoon means frogs! Create a simple spinning wheel showing the life cycle: egg → tadpole → froglet → frog. Great for science and sequencing skills.
7. Rain Stick
Fill a cardboard tube with dry rice or small stones, seal the ends, and decorate the outside. Tip it back and forth to create the sound of rain. A lovely sensory instrument!
