Starting preschool is one of the biggest transitions in a young child's life — and in a parent's too! A little preparation goes a long way in making that first morning smooth, tearless (well, mostly!), and full of excitement.
1. Visit the School Together
Familiarity reduces anxiety. Bring your child to visit Enfance before the first day. Walk through the classrooms, meet the teachers, and let them explore the playground. When the environment feels known and safe, the transition is so much easier.
2. Read Books About Starting School
Stories are a powerful way to prepare children emotionally. Some of our favourites include The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg. Reading together opens up conversations about feelings in a natural, non-threatening way.
3. Practise the Morning Routine
A week or two before school starts, begin waking up at the school-day time. Practise getting dressed, eating breakfast, and arriving at school on time. Predictable routines are enormously calming for young children.
4. Talk About What to Expect — Positively
Use enthusiastic, positive language. "You are going to meet so many friends!" and "You will get to paint and sing and play!" Plant seeds of excitement, not anxiety. Children absorb our emotions — if we project calm confidence, they will too.
5. Create a Goodbye Ritual
A consistent, brief goodbye ritual — a special hug, a secret handshake, or a blown kiss — gives children something predictable to hold onto during separation. Keep goodbyes short and cheerful. Lingering only increases anxiety for both of you.
Remember: every child adjusts at their own pace, and our teachers are experienced at making every child feel welcomed, seen, and loved from day one.
